Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured
Quote: Mark Twain
I love this quote as it sums up the toxic nature of anger. It is so important for each of us to find a way to release and let go of any frustrations or any unmet needs before they result in angry outbursts or anger sitting and multiplying in our own bodies.
When we are angry our bodies and minds contract, tighten and close to life. We miss all the smiles from people and the magic nature of human life. We are unable to grow as our minds become hooked on the story about the anger we feel. Our bodies suffer terribly when we feel angry. We need to take a step back and unhook from the emotional reactivity associated with anger so we can limit our own suffering and respond wisely.
When I feel myself get triggered to something someone said or has or has not done I ask myself three things:
– Is it true
– Is it necessary
– Is it kind
These three questions force me to pause and reflect and open my heart before responding.
I also like to take a few deep breaths or even walk away from the situation to gather myself. Sitting quietly and listening to some calming music works well too as well as some yoga moves coupled with deep breathing. These are some tools I use but I encourage you to find what works for you.
Once present with our inner life, we are able to respond to those around us with wisdom, empathy and true strength.
I encourage you all to find your way of dealing with anger so when you feel yourself getting triggered you know exactly how you can release the tight contracted sensations from your body and respond from an open hearted place.
