An Introduction to Yoga

Yoga is an ancient Indian science that dates back approximately 5,000 years. The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit word yuj meaning union or to join. Hence, yoga is the unification of body, mind and soul and by practicing various positions (asana’s) combined with the breathing techniques (pranayama) one can bring all aspects of one’s being into balance and harmony.

The benefits of a regular yoga practice are vast.  This single comprehensive system has been scientifically proven to improve circulation, reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure, and lift mood and decrease pain and inflammation in the body.

The nervous system is strengthened and made calm. Blood flow is increased to the internal organs and more oxygen is delivered to the cells. Muscles and bones are strengthened and the joints, tendons and ligaments are made more flexible.

At the same time a wonderful feeling of space is also created in the mind enabling us to clear away the mental clutter so we can see things more clearly. Yoga is a complete journey of mind –body-self-discovery.
